Artist Statement

I am a ceramic artist based in Melbourne. Direct observation in nature is a significant part of my ceramics practice and I regularly return to familiar places to make nature studies and track seasonal shifts. I make water colour studies of plants and birds and transpose this imagery onto overscaled hand build ceramic vessels. I am interested in remnant bush found in urban areas and the astonishing biodiversity it supports. I’ve watched the effects of the devastating Australian bushfires in 2020 and the stunning regrowth that’s now happening two years later. I lament the loss of habitat that has occurred since colonisation and pay my respects to the First Nations Custodians who have cared for this land for over 60,000 years.

Ceramics is my chosen material for capturing these interests. The earth supports our habitat and for me, clay symbolises our connection to land, soil and growth. As a woman, I also resonate with ceramic’s feminine association for it’s historical use in the home.
